China–Europe Rail Freight Guide: Transit, DDP and Rates
How our duties-paid China–Europe rail line works: 16–19 days by rail plus UPS, what DDP covers, rates for 26 countries from 26 kg, and when rail beats air.

Key takeaways
- Our China–Europe rail line is door to door with duties and taxes paid (DDP): about 16–19 days by rail, then UPS delivers to the address or Amazon warehouse.
- Published general-cargo rates cover 26 European countries from 26 kg, in three weight bands; Germany starts at ¥9.5/kg and the UK at ¥11.7/kg for 101 kg and over.
- Rail costs roughly a third of the air price and takes about two weeks longer than a direct air consolidation, but is faster than sea freight at 22–25 days to port plus delivery.
- Chargeable weight works as for air: the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (÷ 6,000), so light, bulky cartons are charged on volume.
Our China–Europe rail line moves general cargo from China to 26 European countries door to door, with duties and taxes paid. The train runs for about 16–19 days, then UPS delivers to the final address or an Amazon warehouse. Published rates start at 26 kg and come to roughly a third of the air price, so rail suits restocks of a few hundred kilograms that can wait about three weeks.
This guide explains how a shipment moves on the line, what the duties-paid price includes, how rail is charged, and how it compares with air and sea freight to Europe.
How does the rail line work?
- You send the weight, carton sizes, goods and destination country, and we confirm the price.
- Your supplier delivers to our Shenzhen warehouse, or we collect the goods.
- We make the export declaration and the cargo leaves on the China–Europe train.
- In Europe the shipment is cleared through import customs, with duties and import VAT already paid.
- UPS delivers each carton to the address or Amazon warehouse, with tracking on the UPS number.
The rail leg takes about 16–19 days. UPS delivery comes on top, and the schedule for your shipment is confirmed when you book. Until UPS scans the cartons, your coordinator tells you where the shipment is; after that, the UPS tracking page explains each status.
What does duties paid (DDP) include?
Under DDP, the price covers the export declaration in China, the rail freight, import clearance in the destination country, import duty and import VAT, and the final delivery. You don't receive a separate tax bill on arrival, and you don't need to arrange import clearance yourself.
That makes rail different from our LCL sea freight to Europe, which is priced DAP: delivered to your door, with clearance and import taxes charged separately. For importers who haven't cleared goods in Europe before, a duties-paid line removes that step.
Which countries does it cover, and what does it cost?
Rates for 26 countries are published on our China–Europe route page, in RMB per chargeable kilogram, in three weight bands: from 26 kg, from 51 kg and from 101 kg. Per-kg prices fall as the shipment gets heavier.
| Destination | 26–50 kg | 51–100 kg | 101 kg and over |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | ¥12.5/kg | ¥11/kg | ¥9.5/kg |
| Poland | ¥13.4/kg | ¥12.4/kg | ¥10.9/kg |
| France | ¥14.5/kg | ¥12.6/kg | ¥11.5/kg |
| Czechia | ¥15/kg | ¥12.6/kg | ¥11.5/kg |
| United Kingdom | ¥16.2/kg | ¥13.2/kg | ¥11.7/kg |
| Netherlands | ¥15.2/kg | ¥13.6/kg | ¥12.5/kg |
| Italy and Spain | ¥15.5/kg | ¥13.6/kg | ¥12.5/kg |
The other countries on the line are Portugal, Austria, Luxembourg, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Romania. These are reference rates for general cargo; the price for your goods is confirmed in writing.
How is rail freight charged?
Rail uses the same rule as air freight: the chargeable weight is the greater of the actual weight and the volumetric weight, length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6,000. Our guide to chargeable weight explains the rule, and the CBM calculator works it out for your cartons.
Two examples to Germany, at the 101 kg band of ¥9.5/kg. Cartons weighing 120 kg in total with a volume of 0.6 CBM have a volumetric weight of 600,000 ÷ 6,000 = 100 kg, so the actual 120 kg is charged: 120 × 9.5 = ¥1,140. Light goods weighing 120 kg but filling 2 CBM have a volumetric weight of 333.3 kg, rounded up to 333.5 kg: 333.5 × 9.5 = ¥3,168.25. Packing tightly matters as much on rail as in the air.
Rail, air or sea to Europe?
| Method | Transit | How it is charged | Duties and import VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air freight | Direct consolidations can arrive 4–7 days after entering our warehouse | Per chargeable kg (÷ 6,000), from ¥47/kg plus origin and destination charges | Stated in your quote |
| China–Europe rail | About 16–19 days by rail, plus UPS delivery | Per chargeable kg (÷ 6,000), from 26 kg | Included (DDP) |
| Sea freight (LCL) | 22–25 days to port, plus delivery | Per CBM or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater | Charged separately (DAP) |
Air is the choice for launches and urgent restocks. Sea is cheapest for large volumes that can wait. Rail sits in between: about a third of the air price, with duties handled, for shipments that can wait about three weeks. Our guide to choosing air, sea, rail or express compares all four methods.
Can rail deliver to Amazon FBA?
Yes. UPS delivers rail shipments to Amazon warehouses in Germany, France, Czechia, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. Send your shipment plan and the fulfillment center codes, and we label the cartons before dispatch; see Amazon FBA shipping for how the first leg works.
What should you check before booking?
- The goods are general cargo: products with batteries, magnets, liquids or powders need a check first and a personal quote.
- The weight, carton sizes and number of cartons, so the chargeable weight and band are right.
- The destination country and full delivery addresses, or Amazon fulfillment center codes.
- The product names, materials and values for the customs declaration.
Send these with a quote request and your coordinator confirms the price, the departure and the delivery schedule.
FAQ
How long does China–Europe rail freight take door to door?
The rail leg takes about 16–19 days, then UPS delivers to the address or Amazon warehouse; the UPS delivery time comes on top. The schedule for your shipment is confirmed when you book.
Do I pay anything on arrival with the duties-paid rail line?
No separate tax bill: the price includes import clearance, import duty and import VAT, as well as UPS delivery. Anything outside the agreed delivery, such as storage you ask for, is quoted separately.
What is the minimum weight for the rail line?
Published rates start at 26 kg chargeable weight. Per-kg prices fall at 51 kg and again at 101 kg, so combining orders into one shipment often lowers the rate.
Can products with batteries go on the rail line?
Our published rail rates are for general cargo. Products with batteries, magnets, liquids or powders need a check first: send the product details and the MSDS, and we confirm whether and how they can ship.
